Marc Chagall: Russian-born French painter. Born to a humble Jewish family in the ghetto of a large town in White Russia, Chagall passed a childhood steeped in Hasidic culture. Very early in life he was encouraged by his mother to follow his vocation and she managed to get him into a St Petersburg art school. Returning to Vitebsk, he became engaged to Bella Rosenfeld (whom he married twelve years later), then, in 1910, set off for Paris, the Mecca of art. He was a tenant at La Ruche, where he had Modigliani and Soutine for neighbours. His Slav Expressionism was tinged with the influence of Daumier, Jean-François Millet, the Nabis and the Fauves. He was also influenced by Cubism. Essentially a colourist, Chagall was interested in the Simultaneist vision of Robert Delaunay and the Luminists of the Section d'Or.
Lloyd's Funds International Art Gallery, along with its clients Portfolios contains 179,400 original oil paintings, over 100,000 watercolors and drawings, nearly 130,000 original lithographs, graphics, sculptures, objets d'art, photographs, and an extensive archival library. The scope of the collection, spanning the years 1714 to 1995, presents a panorama of Marc Chagall's diverse and evolving art. | ![]() |

The Gallery exhibits a permanent retrospective of oil paintings, which is comprised of Marc Chagall's early works, while few works painted after World War II seem to possess the conviction and immediacy of those efforts of his early years, the artist's canvases and graphic art continued to exude a unique artistic intelligence.
Periodic rotation of the collection and changing special exhibitions allow visitors to view varying works on repeat visits. An interactive computer touch screen allows visitors to see photographs and paintings not on display along with quotations by Marc Chagall or other Masters. At the age of 90 Marc Chagall became the first living artist to be exhibited at the Louvre. A Marc Chagall museum is located in Nice, France. And on September 1987, a collection of Chagall lithographs was purchased from Ida and Marc Chagall by a private collector, and stored away in Switzerland until its recent display for sale on Lloyd's Funds International web site. | ![]() |
